Mathaf Encyclopedia of Modern Art and the Arab World is a bilingual, peer-reviewed online resource providing free in-depth information on modern and contemporary artists from the Arab world. The Research and Curatorial team at Mathaf have commissioned scholars and independent researchers to author Encyclopedia entries, since the start of the project in 2013, as part of the development of Mathaf and production of knowledge around its permanent collection.
The Encyclopedia standardizes data on Arab artists encouraging multiple perspectives on the history of art in the context of multiple modernities internationally. In addition, it provides scholarly essays and interviews with artists sharing a variety of voices and positions, placing the Encyclopedia entries in wider narratives and contexts.
Mathaf Encyclopedia continues to develop and publish entries on all artists from Mathaf's growing Permanent Collection and beyond. In doing so it continues to support the exchange of knowledge and building of networks between researchers and scholars around the world.
